Pocahontas.... On April 5, 1983, a private company issued a Commemorative Cover to honor one of the most remarkable women of pre-America - Pocahontas. An
intermediary for Captain Smith, Pocahontas learned English, married
Englishman John Rolfe, was christened 'the Lady Rebecca' and traveled
to London, where she was received at court as a princess. On a
Commemorative Cover, the stamp merely serves the purpose of supplying
current postage, for without it, the post office will not stamp a
postmark. The date of April 5 represents the date she married John
Rolfe in 1614. The stamp was
cancelled in Williamsburg, VA, where her father was a powerful leader
of the Virginia Algonquian Indians in eastern Virginia.
The full-color cachet
(artwork on the envelope) shows a portrait of Pocahonts in both native
and English clothes. The company that produced this cover has also
written a brief commentary about Pocahontas, which we have included.
Matted in blue, it's sized to fit a standard 8 x 10 picture frame. ***CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY PLUS COMMENTARY INCLUDED***
