International Geophysical Year - 1957-58 and Paul A. Siple.... On May 31, 1958, the USPS issued a stamp to commemorate the International Geophysical Year
of 1957-1958 in which countries from around the world came together to
study Earth science. It also spawned an 18 month study of the
Antarctic. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the stamp cancelled from the city of issue (Chicago, IL) on the first day of issue captioned above. Note the special additional postmark created by the post office to cancel this stamp on its 'birthday.'
The cachet (artwork on the envelope) features two black and white portraits of Paul A. Siple, who first went to the Antarctic in 1928 with Admiral Byrd representing Eagle Scouts (photo
on the left.) He went to the Antarctic five more times and during the
International Geophysical Year was the inaugural leader at the South
Pole Station (photo on the right.) In the early 60's, he, along with
Charles F. Passel, invented the 'wind chill factor.'
The piece is matted in blue and white and sized to fit a standard 8x10 frame. At Wall Art Collectibles, we always mat to standard frame sizes, allowing you to select a frame that best suits your decor. The First Day Cover comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.
