On August 15, 1939, the USPS issued a stamp commemorating the 25th Anniversary of the opening of the Panama Canal August 15, 1914. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the stamp cancelled from the city of issue (the USS Charleston in the Canal Zone) on the first day of issue captioned above. The stamp depicts a ship on the canal as well as President Theodore Roosevelt and George Washington Goethals, the US Army officer and civil engineer who supervised the construction of the Canal.
The black & white cachet (artwork on the envelope) features the USS Charleston locking through. Collectible, historic, this is a great piece of postal, marine, and engineering memorabilia.
Double matted in blue & white, it's sized to fit a standard 8 x 10 picture frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity Included***
