Oveta Culp Hobby WAC 1st Day Postal Cover 3 Stamps..... On April 15, 2011, the USPS issued a stamp to honor Stateswoman Oveta Culp Hobby. Shown here is a genuine First Day Postal Cover, an envelope with the new 84-cents stamp, depicting Hobby in her WAC uniform, cancelled from the city of issue (Houston, TX) on the first day of issue
captioned above. The addition of two older stamps - a 3-cents stamp
issued in 1952 honoring Women in Our Armed Forces, and a 32-cents stamp
again honoring Women in Military Service, this time with the Coast Guard
- elevate this cover to a Combo. The older stamps were added to the envelope and then were cancelled along with the new stamp on its 'birthday.'
The full-color cachet
(artwork on the envelope) features a photo of Oveta Culp Hobby in her US
Army uniform against the backdrop of the US flag. The 1st Commanding
Officer of the Women's Army Corps, the 1st Secretary of the US
Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, and the Chairman of the
Board of the Houston Post, Hobby has worn many hats. The picture is
printed on silk with an embossed gold border.
