Oil's First Century....

On August 27, 1959, the USPS issued a stamp commemorating the one hundred anniversary of the Oil Industry and the Drake Well.  Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the 4-cents stamp cancelled from the city of issue (Titusville, PA) on the first day of issue captioned above. Note the cancellation which has a separate postmark depicting the Drake Well.

The black and white cachet (artwork on the envelope created by a private company) shows an illustration by Norman Rockwell of three members of the oil industry - the driller, the scientist and the service man.  At the bottom is a smaller picture of the Drake Well in Titusville, which marks the beginning of the Oil Industry in America. Because this cover was addressed with a sticker that left a discoloration on the envelope, we have covered it over with a sticker on the bottom right-hand corner that reads - 'First Day of Issue.'

Double matted in blue and white, this piece is sized to fit a standard 8x10 frame.   ***CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY INCLUDED***
