The USPS honored the author who developed the method of investigating "the depths of our common nature", Nathaniel Hawthorne with a stamp in 1983.  Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the new stamp cancelled from the city of issue (Salem, Mass.) on the first day of issue (July 8, 1983.)

The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) features a portrait of Hawthorne as well as drawings relating to his novel The House of Seven Gables, and his children's book Tanglewood Tales.

Historic, collectible, it's double matted in  green & white and will fit a standard 8 x 10 picture frame.  ***Certificate of Authenticity Included plus a short blurb on Hawthorne***
