Traditional Dance.... On June 7,1996, the USPS issued a set of five stamps to commemorate Native American Dances. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the stamp for the Traditional Dance cancelled from the city of issue (Oklahoma City, OK) on the first day of issue captioned above. In short, it's the 'birthday' of the stamp - a collectible, historic piece of postal and Indian memorabilia.
The full-color cachet (artwork
on the envelope) shows a Native American performing a Traditional
Dance, which honors the animals and birds of land and sky - the
creatures that provided sustenance to all generations. In a Traditional
Dance, some dancers imitate the movements of animals and birds; others,
the hunter. Dress for the Traditional Dance features leggings, vests,
and quivers made from deer and elk skins, decorated with porcupine
quills, cowrie shells, and elk teeth. Headpieces display bird feathers
and the fur of the otter, wolf and other animals. This is a beautiful
piece of postal stamp art that would incorporate nicely with other southwest art on a wall.
Double matted in blue and white, it's sized to fit a standard 8 x 10 picture frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity Included as well as a COMMENTARY on the Traditional Dance***
