Nathan Bedford Forrest... With no military training, Nathan Bedford Forrest became one of the Civil War's greatest cavalry commanders. His innate mastery of military tactics, particularly raiding tactics, made him a feared opponent of the Union.
Shown here is a Commemorative Cover in the form of a Proof Card, bearing the postmark of July 13 from Chapel Hill, TN commemorating the anniversary of Forrest's birth. On a Commemorative Cover, the stamp serves the purpose of supplying postage, for without it, the post office would not furnish a cancellation. The two stamps used are the US Flag Stamp and the 1962 stamp commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Shiloh.
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) features a portrait of Forrest. Also included is a short commentary about this colorful and daring Confederate commander, having the particular distinction of having 29 horses shot from under him!
