On June 13, 1987, the USPS issued a set of 50 stamps commemorating North American Wildlife. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the stamp, depicting the Scarlet Tanager cancelled from the city of issue (the USPS Station set up in Toronto, Canada to coincide with the Canada Stamp Show) on the first day of issue captioned above. The addition of two other stamps - the New Jersey State Bird (American Goldfinch) and State Flower (Violet), and the distinctive New Jersey State Flag, make this a Combo....an extra special first day cover. The two older stamps were added to the envelope along with the new one and then all three were cancelled on the 'birthday' of the Scarlet Tanager Stamp.
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope produced by a private company, not the post office) features artwork of a pair of Scarlet Tanagers, the brilliant red of the male earning their name, by noted wildlife artist Dan Balke. The producer of this cover has also written a brief commentary about this summer resident of the Midwest and Northeast, which we've included.
