On April 4, 2002, the USPS issued 50 different stamps in a series called Greetings From..... In a postcard format, a stamp was issued for each state. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the stamp for the state of North Carolina cancelled from the city of issue (New York, NY) on the first day of issue captioned above. Even though the stamp depicts the Wright Brothers taking off at Kittyhawk and the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, we all know that deep within the heart of every North Carolinian lies what really should have been depicted on the stamp....their favorite NCAA Basketball Team! And in North Carolina, there are FOUR great teams to scream yourself silly for...no wonder the post office put a plane and a lighthouse on the stamp!
So, shown on the cachet (artwork on the envelope) are all four teams from all four great schools and four past and present great basketball coaches (Dean, Mike, Jim and Dave), and all four mascots.... well, it's just more than one state should have.
If you're from North Carolina, or if you're a person that thinks March Madness makes the Superbowl pale by comparison, you'll love this cover...because, some time during the tournament, you've rooted for one of these teams, not to mention all the great players that have blown us away!
