NAACP Centennial.... Founded on February 12, 1909, the NAACP
is the oldest grassroots-based civil rights organization. On July 11,
2009 in New York City, the Centennial National Convention was held.
Shown here is genuine Postal Commemorative Cover,
an envelope with the postmark 'freezing' this place and date. The
current postage is represented by two stamps - an 8-cents US Flag and
White House stamp and a 37-cents stamp commemorating the 1964 Civil
Rights Act. On a commemorative cover, the role of the stamp or stamps
is to supply current postage, for without it, the USPS would not affix
a postmark.
The cachet (artwork on the envelope) shows a portrait of W.E.B. DuBois, one of the founders of the NAACP along with the NAACP logo. It's printed on silk, surrounded by gold embossing.
The caption on the lower right reads, "The NAACP Centennial National
Convention opened today in New York City. Among those scheduled to
address the attendees are Pres. Barack Obama, Atty. Gen. Eric Holder,
NY Gov. David Paterson, Rep. Chas. Rangel and Ret. Gen. Colin Powell.
For 100 years, NAACP members have been advocates of civil rights and
equality for all Americans." Historic, collectible, and issued in very limited quantities, it's matted in black & white and will fit a standard 8 x 10 picture frame.
