Roy
Rogers, William S. Hart, Tom Mix,
Gene Autry....
On April 17, 2010, the USPS
issued a set of four stamps- designed to resemble movie posters current
during the actors' careers - titled 'Cowboys of the Silver Screen' to honor
four men who Jean Picker Firstenberg, president emerita of the American
Film Institute, said, "...helped to refine the art, the magic, and the
adventure to be found in the old West."
Shown here is a genuine First Day
Cover for one of these four Cowboys, Gene Autry. This first day cover
is an envelope with the new stamp
cancelled from the city of issue (Oklahoma City, OK - home of the
National Cowboy and Western Heritage
Museum) on the first day of issue (captioned above.)
Note the special
postmark created expressly to cancel this set of four stamps on their
'birthday' featuring a cowboy on horseback twirling a lasso.
The full-color cachet features
a black and white portrait of Autry superimposed over a picture in
color of Autry on his horse Champion. The silver screen's most popular
singing cowboy, Autry, to this day, is the only entertainer with five
stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame! In 1950 The Gene Autry Show launched on
television and ran through the 1955 season. The artwork is printed on silk and is 'framed' with an
embossed gold border. See the other three matted First Day Covers for
Cowboys - Tom Mix, William S. Hart and Roy Rogers in this category.
Double matted in black & white,
it's sized to fit a standard 8 x 10 frame. ***Certificate of
Authenticity Included***
