On October 18, 1994, the USPS issued a set of 20 stamps called Legends of the West. This stamp is one of those and honors legendary mountain man, scout and soldier.. ...Kit Carson. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the new stamp cancelled from the city of issue (Laramie, Wyoming) on the first day of issue captioned above. In short, it's the 'birthday' of the stamp - a collectible, historic piece of postal and Western memorabilia.
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) shows a portrait of Kit Carson and smaller ones of him as a mountain man and an army officer. Interesting Fact: For his service in the Civil War, he was promoted to brigadier general - the Army's only man of rank who could not read or write! The producer of this cover has also written a brief commentary about Kit Carson, which we've included.
Double matted in blue & white, it's sized to fit a standard 8 x 10 picture frame. ***CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY plus COMMENTARY INCLUDED***
