Alexander Calder.... On March 25, 1998, the USPS honored kinetic
sculptor, Alexander
Calder with a set of five stamps depicting five
different pieces of sculpture....Sculpture "The Rearing Stallion",
1928; Sculpture "Portrait of a Young Man", 1945; Sculpture "Un Effet du
Japonais", 1945; Mobile "Black Cascade ", 1959; and, Sculpture
"Untitled", 1965. Shown here is a genuine 1st Day Cover, an envelope
with the stamp depicting the mobile 'Black
Cascade', cancelled from the city of issue (Washington DC) on the first day of issue captioned
above.
The cachet (artwork on the envelope) features a black and
white portrait of Calder at work. Historic and collectible, this is a very personal gift for
anyone who loves and appreciates the art of Alexander Calder.
