Maxwell D. Taylor helped organize the nation's first airborne division, the 82nd, leading it in invasions of North Africa, Sicily, and Italy. In 1944, Maxwell took command of the 101st Airborne Division leading it in the heroic invasion of Normandy...he was the 1st general to land on the beach on D-Day, paving the way to fight and command at the Battle of the Bulge. He served in Korea as Commander of the US and UN Forces. Shown here is a Commemorative Cover in the form of a Proof Card, bearing the postmark of August 26 - Taylor's birthday, and Keytesville, MO - his place of birth. On a Commemorative Cover, the stamp serves the purpose of supplying postage, for without it, the post office would not furnish a cancellation. The two stamps used are a US Flag stamp and the 2 cents Army and Navy stamp issued in 1940.
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) features a portrait of Taylor, an Airborne scene, and the insignias of the 82nd and 101st Airborne. Also included is a short commentary of Taylor's career which stretches to Ambassadorship to South Vietnam. Historic, collectible, this is one of several pieces of WWII and US Army and Airborne Postal Memorabilia offered by Wall Art Collectibles.
Matted in military green, this is matted to fit a standard 8 x 10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity and Commentary Included***
