Mahatma Gandhi....

On January 26, 1961, the USPS issued two stamps (4-cents and 8-cents) to honor Mahatma Gandhi. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the 4-cents stamp cancelled from the city of issue (Washington DC) on the first day of issue captioned above. Note the special postmark featuring a spinning wheel with the words "From Darkness Lead to Light," created expressly to cancel both stamps on their 'birthday.'

The black & white cachet (artwork on the envelope) features a portrait of Gandhi with a smaller inset depicting India.  The caption below reads,  "Champion of Liberty - Mahatma Gandhi - Hindu Nationalist Leader, 1869-1948."  Freedom, passive resistance, and the welfare of all, are principles in which he dramatized and practiced to inspire courage and dignity. Historic, collectible, this is one of many items honoring notable people offered by Postal Stamp Art.

Double matted in green & white, it's sized to fit a standard 8 x 10 frame.  ***Certificate of Authenticity Included***   Note:  This cover was addressed back to the collector in pencil.  We have erased it, but, there is a very faint impression of the indentation.
