Pittsburgh Pirate - Roberto Clemente......
ROBERTO CLEMENTE..... a gentleman, a humanitarian, one heck of a baseball player. If you love baseball, you have to love Clemente. This piece features his color portrait with a genuine First Day Cover of his 1984 stamp. Even though he has 2 US stamps, this is his first and issued just for him (not part of a series.) Best of all, it was cancelled on the First Day of Issue from Carolina, Puerto Rico.
The cachet (artwork on the envelope produced by a private company) features a color drawing of Clemente along with his distinctive signature and a small inset that says 'outfield.'
You don't have to be a Pirate's fan to want this. Clemente is the third baseball player to receive a US stamp - right behind Jackie Robinson in 1982 and Babe Ruth in 1983. His stamp commemorates the 50th anniversary of his birth and is the hardest 1st Day Cover to find. Score a Home Run with this one!
Matted in Black 11x14....*** Certificate of Authenticity included ***
