On February 26, 1946, the USPS issued a stamp to honor the heroic deeds of the Merchant Marines in WWII. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with four Merchant Marine Stamps cancelled from the city of issue (Washington DC) on the first day of issue (captioned above.)
The black & white cachet (artwork on the envelope) features two photos of U.S. Liberty Ships and the words, "Loading the Sinews of War." If you or someone in your family was a Merchant Marine either in WWII or in subsequent wars, this is a great piece of postal and military memorabilia honoring a generally-overlooked contribution to war effort. The combination of a great cachet, the age of the cover, and the fact that it is unaddressed, all add up to a collectible, historic piece of postal stamp art which will be handed down to future generations.
Double matted in green & white, we have sized it to fit a standard 8 x 10 picture frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity Included***
