On May 14, 2004, the USPS issued three stamps commemorating the 200th Aniversary of the historic expedition of William Clark and Meriwether Lewis (1804-6) on its 200th Anniversary. Shown here is one of these and features both William Clark and Meriwether Lewis on a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the new stamp cancelled from the city of issue (Washburn, ND) on the first day of issue captioned above. Several "cities of issue" were selected to cancel these stamps on the first day, marking a trail across the country until the Pacific coast was reached.
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) features art produced exclusively for this cover by Chris Calle, titled "Sacred Bison Calling." During the winter of 1804-05, Lewis & Clark wintered with the Mandan and Hidatsa nations. On January 5, 1805, Clark described a ritual 'buffalo-calling' ceremony the American Indians used to draw bison to an area. On January 7th, buffalo were sited and for the next few days, over 50 were killed, thereby sustaining the Indians and the Corps of Discovery for the duration of the winter. This is one of several collectible, historic pieces of American History Memorabilia offered by Wall Art Collectbles.
Matted in blue, it's sized to fit a standard 8 x 10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity Included as well as a short commentary on this portion of the journey***
