LIVERPOOL & MANCHESTER The Rocket Postal Cover 5 Stamps.... On
March 12, 1980, the British Post Office issued a 5-stamp se-tenant to
commemorate the first passenger-carrying railway in the world, which
opened on September 15, 1830...The Liverpool & Manchester Railway. Shown here is a genuine First Day Postal Cover, an envelope with all five stamps cancelled from the city of issue (Edinburgh) on the first day of issue captioned above. And what a set of stamps this is! The first stamp shows The Rocket
in its most original form. The second stamp shows first-class and
second-class carriages. The third stamp shows an open third-class coach
and a two-story cattle truck full of sheep. The fourth stamp shows the
first-ever rail drive...an open coach carried on a truck with the
owner's horse box. The fifth stamp shows a truck-load of merchandise
covered by a tarpaulin and a red Post Office Mail van. The enclosed
Commentary will also tell you the settings for each stamp. ***Note the
special 'Wheel' postmarks expressly designed to cancel this set of
stamps on their 'birthday.'***
The
cachet (artwork on the envelope - in this case designed by the same
artist that designed the stamps) features a larger drawing of The
Rocket.
Matted in blue, this piece will fit a standard 8 1/2 x 11 picture frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity plus Commentary Included***
