On August 22, 1982, the USPS issued a stamp to commemorate the Touro Synagogue, the first synagogue in the United States. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the new stamp cancelled from the city of issue (Newport, RI) on the first day of issue captioned above.
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) features the Touro Synagogue designed by Peter Harrison and completed in 1763. Many years later, George Washington penned these words to the congregation, "To bigotry, no sanction, to persecution, no assistance," thereby assuring freedom to worship as they chose. This is one of several pieces of Postal Stamp Art celebrating Judaica offered by Wall Art Collectibles.
Double matted in blue & white, it's sized to fit a standard 8 X 10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity Included as well as a short commentary about the Touro Synagogue***
