John Harvard - Harvard University....

On September 3, 1986, the USPS issued a stamp honoring John Harvard, who, upon his death at age 31, bequeathed half his estate (400 pounds) and 400 books to the proposed school or college authorized by the Great and General Court of Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1636.  That school officially opened in 1638 and on March 13, 1639 was named Harvard College. Today Harvard University stands as one of the most prestigious institutions of higher learning in the world. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the new stamp cancelled from the city of issue (Cambridge, MA) on the first day of issue captioned above.

The sepia-toned cachet (artwork on the envelope) features a drawing of Eliot House at the top and the statue of John Harvard and the steeple of Memorial Chapel at the bottom.  The company that produced this cover has also written a brief commentary about Harvard University on its 350th Anniversary, which we've included.

Double matted in blue & white, it's sized to fit a standard 8 x 10 frame.  ***CERTIFICATE of AUTHENTICITY Plus COMMENTARY INCLUDED***
