The USPS honored the author of the Uncle Remus stories, Joel Chandler Harris with a stamp in 1948. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the new stamp cancelled from the city of issue (Eatonton, Ga.) on the first day of issue (December 9, 1948.)
The cachet (artwork on the envelope) features a portrait of Harris and Br'er Rabbit. In the 1940's most First Day Covers actually went through the mail. Since the subscriber to the company that produced the envelope was responsible for sending the envelope to the city of issue in order for the new stamp to be put on and cancelled on the 1st Day, unless a separate envelope was supplied for its return, the envelope had to be addressed back to the sender. (Are you still with me?) Some people typed their name and address on, others did it in ink, others with a mailing label. The smart ones, with an eye toward posterity, used pencil. Here you have a collector that was smart - if you look very closely you will see a faint address that has been erased. Trust me, on the wall in a frame it will never be noticed, but, upon closer inspection, it will make an interesting story!
Historic, collectible, it's double matted in green & white and will fit a standard 8 x 10 picture frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity Included ***
