On July 6, 1990, the USPS issued a set of five stamps honoring Five Great Athletes who all won Olympic Gold. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, a maximum card with the stamp for Jesse Owens cancelled from the city of issue (Minneapolis, MN) on the first day of issue captioned above. A Maximum Card is made of heavy stock paper with artwork taking up the entire card, hence the word 'maximum' meaning maximum artwork. On a 'Maxi Card', the words "First Day of Issue" are not added so as not to interfere with the art. On the back of the card, a short commentary describes the Olympic feats of Owens and indicates that it is indeed cancelled on the First Day of Issue.
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) features a close-up portrait of the man who won four gold medals at the 1936 games for the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter sprint, the long jump, and the 400-meter relay. Historic, collectible, this is a great piece of Olympic Memorabilia.
Double matted in blue & white, it's sized to fit a standard 8 x 10 picture frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity and Commentary Included ***
