On May 3, 1940, the USPS issued a stamp to honor John Philip Sousa, Bandmaster, Composer, and Conductor of the U.S. Marine Band. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the stamp cancelled from the city of issue (Washington DC) on the first day of issue captioned above.
The black & white cachet (artwork on the envelope produced by a private company, not the post office) features Sousa's portrait. This cover is addressed, as the majority were in the 40's; we've covered up the typewritten address with a 'First Day of Issue' sticker to make it more visually appealing. The brownish lines are actually shadows cast by the envelope on the scanner. This cover is a great piece of music and postal memorabilia.
Double matted in blue & white, it's sized to fit a standard 8x10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity Included***
