Charles Fremont.... On October 18, 1994, the USPS issued a set of 20 stamps called Legends of the West. This stamp is one of those and honors a man best remembered for mapping the West - John Fremont. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the new stamp cancelled from the city of issue (Laramie, Wyoming) on the first day of issue captioned above. In short, it's the 'birthday' of the stamp - a collectible, historic piece of postal and Western memorabilia.
The full-color cachet
(artwork on the envelope) shows a portrait of Fremont and a melange of
other photos, including his wife, the daughter of Missouri Senator
Thomas Hart Benton. The company that
produced this cover has also written a brief commentary of John Fremont
- Topographical Engineer, California US Senator, presidential-nominee
and major general in the Union Army. Read more in this included
addition to the cover.
Double matted in blue & white, it's sized to fit a standard 8 x 10 picture fr
