Jane Adams.....
On April 26, 1940, the USPS issued a stamp to
honor social scientist Jane Adams, who helped found Hull House in Chicago and was the first American woman to
receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope
with the 10-cents stamp, depicting a portrait of Adams, cancelled from
the city of issue (Chicago, IL) on the first day of issue
captioned above.
The cachet (artwork on
the envelope) features a drawing of Hull
House in Chicago with caption below reading, "Jane Adams -
Sociologist - Born Dept. 6, 1860 at Cedarville, Ill.- Graduated from
Rockford College in 1881 - During post-graduate work in U.S. and Europe,
she became interested in social problems - She spent her life in
bettering the living conditions of the poor - In 1889 she founded Hull
House, a settlement work in Chicago - Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in
1931 - She died May 2, 1935."
