Jane Adams.....

On April 26, 1940, the USPS issued a stamp to honor social scientist Jane Adams, who helped found Hull House in Chicago and was the first American woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.  Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the 10-cents stamp, depicting a portrait of Adams, cancelled from the city of issue (Chicago, IL) on the first day of issue captioned above.

The cachet (artwork on the envelope) features a drawing of Hull House in Chicago with caption below reading,  "Jane Adams - Sociologist - Born Dept. 6, 1860 at Cedarville, Ill.- Graduated from Rockford College in 1881 - During post-graduate work in U.S. and Europe, she became interested in social problems - She spent her life in bettering the living conditions of the poor - In 1889 she founded Hull House, a settlement work in Chicago - Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931 - She died May 2, 1935."

Double matted in blue and white, it's sized to fit a standard 8 x 10 frame.  ***Certificate of Authenticity Included***
