On October 15, 1948, the USPS issued a stamp to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Arrival in Oklahoma of the Five Civilized Indian Tribes - Choctaw, Creek, Chickasaw, Cherokee, and Seminole. Shown here is a First Day Cover, an envelope with, in this case, four of the new stamps cancelled from the city of issue (Muskogee, Oklahoma) on the first day of issue captioned above.
The cachet (artwork on the envelope features a Leader from each of the five tribes: Push-Ma-Ta-Ha from the Choctaw, Yoholomicco of the Creek, Sho-Ni-On of the Chickasaw, Se-Quo-Yah of the Cherokee, and Osceola of the Seminole. Also shown is a scene depicting "The Trail of Tears." Collectible, historic, unaddressed, this is a truly hard -to-find cover.
People often ask us where we get such an envelope. These come from people's collections. So, back in 1948, this particular envelope which features artwork produced by the company Artcraft (still in existence today) was collected by a person who subscribed to Artcraft. It went into that person's collection. Obviously it was well taken care of since, over 50 years later, it is clean, no glue line bleeding through, and unaddressed (all elements that add value to a First Day Cover.) Eventually the collection was sold off, and here it is today, waiting to go to 'another good home.'
Double matted in green & white, this piece is sized to fit a standard 8 x 10 picture frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity included***
