On August 17, 1959, the USPS issued a stamp commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the first official airmail by Balloon "Jupiter" from LaFayette, Indiana. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the stamp cancelled from the city of issue (LaFayette, IN) on the first day of issue captioned above. Note the additional postmark for LaFayette.
The black & white cachet (artwork on the envelope produced by a private company, not the post office) shows a photograph of "Jupiter" ready for flight. It flew 30 miles to Crawfordsville, IN. Interestingly, there is one surviving piece of mail from this historic voyage, which now resides in the Smithsonian. This is a great piece of postal as well as Indiana memorabilia.
Double matted in blue & white, it's sized to fit a standard 8x10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity Included***
