Holland Smith, only the third Marine Corps officer ever to attain the rank of full General, began his career in WWI winning the prestigious French Croix de Guerre. In WWII he was commanding general of the First Marine Division, his specialty being amphibious warfare. He led Marine Corps divisions and one Army division through the Gilbert and Marshall Islands, Saipan, Guam, Tinian, and finally as Commanding General of all Fleet Marine forces in the Pacific, the invasion of Iwo Jima.
Shown here is a Commemorative Cover in the form of a Proof Card, bearing the postmark of April 20 - Smith's birthday, and Seale, AL - his place of birth. On a Commemorative Cover, the stamp serves the purpose of supplying postage, for without it, the post office would not furnish a cancellation. The two stamps used are a US Flag stamp and the 3 cents Iwo Jima stamp commemorating the USMC on 7/11/45.
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) features a portrait of Smith, the raising of the US flag on Iwo Jima, and his division patches. Also included is a short commentary of Smith's illustrious career. Historic, collectible, this is one of several pieces of USMC and WWII Postal Memorabilia offered by Wall Art Collectibles.
Matted in military green, this is matted to fit a standard 8 x 10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity and Commentary Included***
