On October 2, 1996, the USPS issued a set of fifteen stamps to commemorate and call attention to Endangered Species in the United States. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the stamp for the Hawaiian Monk Seal cancelled from the city of issue (San Diego, Ca.at the San Diego Zoo) on the first day of issue (see above.) Note the special postmark designed to cancel this set of stamps on its 'birthday.'
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) depicts this endangered sea mammal, only 700 to 1,000 remaining as of 1996. Collectible, historic, this cover pays tribute to the animals who are relying on us for their future. The company that produced this cover has written a brief commentary about the Monk Seal, which we've included.
Double matted in blue & white, it's sized to fit a standard 8 x 10 picture frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity plus Commentary Included***
