Herman Melville....

On August 1, 1984, the USPS issued a stamp to honor the author Herman Melville. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the stamp, featuring a portrait of Melville, cancelled from the city of issue (New Bedford, MA) on the first day of issue captioned above.

The cachet (artwork on the envelope) depicts a dramatic scene from Melville's masterpiece Moby Dick of the behemoth tossing a whaling dory like a toy while the sailors in another dory helplessly look on.  The company that produced this cover has also written a brief commentary about Melville, which we've included.

Double matted in blue and white, this item is sized to fit a standard 8x10 frame.  ***Certificate of Authenticity plus Commentary Included***
