On February 1, 1978, the USPS issued a stamp to honor Harriet Tubman, whose valiant efforts led run-away slaves through the "Underground" Railroad" to freedom in the North and Canada. Shown here is a genuine First Day of Issue Collector Panel, a heavy-stock card with artwork created expressly for this, and the new stamp cancelled from the city of issue (Washington DC) on the first day of issue captioned above. See the close-up picture for a larger view of the stamp and cancellation. If you're used to seein First Day Covers only on envelopes, this will open your eyes to other media created to cancel stamps on their 'birthday.'
The full-color artwork by artist J. Barbour, was taken from an original painting commissioned for this Collector Panel. It features Harriet Tubman 'conducting' a family of slaves to safe harbor. The "Moses of her People" stands as a testament that indeed - one person can make a difference! It's double matted in a dark green to compliment the bright colors of the print, and is sized to fit a standard 11x14 frame. At Wall Art Collectibles, we always mat to standard sizes allowing you to select the frame of your choice.
This piece of collectible and historic Black Heritage memorabilia is but one of over 60 offered by Wall Art Collectibles. From Medicine to Literature, from music to science, US Stamps have celebrated the accomplishments of African-Americans, including the first US stamp issued to celebrate a baseball player...Jackie Robinson in 1982.
