Hanukkah - 2009.... On October 9, 2009, the USPS issued a stamp depicting a lighted menorah to commemorate Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the new stamp cancelled from the city of issue (New York City) on the first day of issue captioned above.
The full-color cachet
(artwork on the envelope) features the centerpiece of a beautiful
mosaic floor in the Ancient Synagogue in Jericho - in use from the 6th
to the 8th centuries A.D. The inscription reads shalom al yisrael - 'peace upon Israel. The
floor also includes an Aramaic dedicatory inscription, a depiction of
the Ark of the Law, a seven-branched menorah, a lulav, and a shofar.
