Matagorda Lighthouse....

On July 23, 2009, the USPS issued its fifth lighthouse set with its Gulf Coast Lighthouses.  The five stamps celebrate the following lighthouses:  Fort Jefferson - Florida; Sand Island - Alabama; Biloxi - Mississippi; Sabine Pass - Louisiana; and, Matagorda Island - Texas.  Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the full color stamp of the Matagorda Island Lighthouse (originally located on the tip of Matagorda Island, marking Pass Cavallo into the then busy port of Indianola)  cancelled from the city of issue (Biloxi, MS) on the first day of issue captioned above.

The cachet (artwork on the envelope) shows a stylized Matagorda Island Lighthouse. The picture is printed on silk, enhanced by an embossed gold border.  Activated in 1859, the 55 ft. iron with brick lining structure turned off its light in 1995.

Double matted in blue and white, the piece is sized to fit a standard 8x10 frame.  ***Certificate of Authenticity Included***
