Fort Jefferson Lighthouse....

On July 23, 2009, the USPS issued its fifth lighthouse set with its Gulf Coast Lighthouses.  The five stamps celebrate the following lighthouses:  Fort Jefferson - Florida; Sand Island - Alabama; Biloxi - Mississippi; Sabine Pass - Louisiana; and, Matagorda Island - Texas.  Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the full color stamp of the Ft. Jefferson Lighthouse  cancelled from the city of issue (Biloxi, MS) on the first day of issue captioned above.

The cachet (artwork on the envelope) shows a stylized Ft. Jefferson Lighthouse against the backdrop of a starry night.  Having had many predecessors, the present  hexagonal iron structure was first lighted in 1876, and is located on Garden Key in the Dry Tortugas - a small group of islands found 70 miles west of Key West. The picture is printed on silk, enhanced by an embossed gold border.

Double matted in blue and white, the piece is sized to fit a standard 8x10 frame.  ***Certificate of Authenticity Included***
