On January 17, 1984, the Royal Poste of Great Britain issued a set of four stamps to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the College of Arms chartered during the reign of Richard III in 1484. These four stamps depict Arms of The College of Arms, Arms of The Earl Marshal, Arms of The City of London, and, Arms of Richard III, Founder. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with all four stamps cancelled from the city of issue (Edinburgh) on the first day of issue captioned above. Note the special "lion in profile" postmark created for the first day cancellation.
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) features a close-up of the Arms of the College of Arms, with its distinctive Red Cross in the shield, associated with St. George, England's patron saint. If you're an Anglophile or a devotee of Heraldry, or, maybe both, you'll love this piece of Postal Stamp Art. It's historic, collectibe, and just plain beautiful. The producer of this cover has also written a brief commentary about The Arms of the College of Arms; we have made a copy for you.
Matted in blue, this piece will fit a standard 8 x 10 picture frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity Included***
