Berlin Airlift.....
On June 26, 1998, the USPS issued a stamp to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Berlin Airlift. From June 23,1948 to May 12, 1949, in order to overcome the Soviet blockade of Berlin, Allies used an airlift to fly food and supplies into the city. Considered to be the start of the Cold War, the blockade also led to negotiations between the US, Canada and Western Europe resulting in the North Atlantic Treaty and later NATO. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the new stamp cancelled from the city of issue (Berlin, Germany on the U.S. Base) on the first day of issue captioned above. The full-color stamp features some people of Berlin, eyes skyward on a transport plane laden with food and supplies. The Berlin Airlift is also a testamont to the transport plane - it started off with thirty-two C-47's; when they were found to be to small, the USAF put seventy-two C-54's into commission.
The color cachet (artwork on the envelope) features German girl holding a bag with loaves of bread, a transport plane above, and the Berlin Airlift Monument in Berlin - Templhof, with the names of 39 British and 31 American pilots who lost their lives during this operation. The producer of this cover has included a short commentary on this event...we made a copy for you.
Double matted in blue & white, it's sized to fit a standard 8 x 10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity plus Commentary Included***
