George Washington... On April 30, 1939, the USPS issued a stamp to commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the Inauguration of George Washington as President of the United States. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope showing the new stamp cancelled from the city of issue (New York City) on the first day of issue captioned above.
The black & white cachet (artwork on the envelope) features a painting of Washington being sworn in on the balcony of the Old City Hall in NYC. This a collectible, historic piece of Presidential memorabilia.
In the 1930's through most of the 1960's, the collector was responsible for sending the envelope to the city of issue to have the new stamp affixed and cancelled on the first day. Unless that person lived in the city of issue, or unless a return envelope was provided, the collector would address the envelope back to himself. Sometimes this was done in ink, sometimes typewritten, sometimes with a sticker. The wise people with an eye toward the future addressed the envelope back to themselves in pencil so the address could be erased. This is one of those envelopes. Only upon very close inspection can the penciled address be seen.
Double matted in blue & white, it will fit a standard 8 x 10 picture frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity Included***
