The Liverpool Great National Steeple Chase 1839.... On June 6, 1979, the Royal Mail of Great Britain issued a set of four stamps to celebrate Horse Racing in Great Britain. The stamps depict Racing at Dorsett Ferry, Windsor 1684; The First Spring Meeting, Newmarket 1793; The Liverpool Great National Steeple Chase 1839; and, Saddling of Mahmoud for the Derby 1936. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the stamp, showing The Liverpool Great National Steeple Chase 1839 cancelled from the city of issue (Liverpool) on the first day of issue captioned above.
The cachet (artwork on the envelope) depicts a racing day, horses and riders waiting for the race to begin. It's printed on silk and 'framed' by a gold-embossed border. Collectible, historic this is a beautiful piece of postal stamp art to honor Horse Racing in Great Britain.
