On February 18, 1937, the USPS issed a stamp to commemorate famous Army Officers. The three chosen to represent the Civil War were Grant, Sherman and Sheridan. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with the new stamp cancelled from the city of issue (Washington DC) on the first day of issue captioned above.
In 1949 most First Day Covers were addressed back to the collector, who was responsible for sending the envelope to the city of issue to get the new stamp on and cancelled on the first day. This envelope is no exception. We have covered the address which was printed in ink with an uncancelled 1937 stamp and a "First Day of Issue" sticker to make the envelope aesthetically pleasing.
The cachet (artwork on the envelope) features portraits of the three generals. Historic, collectible, this cover is a great piece of Civil War memorabilia.
Double matted in blue & white, it's sized to fit a standard 8 x 10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity Included***
