Gowan & Marx....

On October 1, 1987, the USPS issued five stamps to commemorate the "Steam Locomotives of the Early 19th Century."   Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover in the form of an envelope, with the stamp for Gowan & Marx, cancelled from the city of issue (Baltimore, MD) on the first day of issue captioned above.

The full-color cachet (artwork on the card) features an illustration of the Gowan & Marx, built in 1839. The caption under the picture reads,  "Pulling more than 40 times the engine's weight, it was one of the most powerful early locomotives."  The company that produced this cover has also written a longer commentary printed on the back of the envelope, which we have copied and included for you.

Double matted in green & white, this piece will fit a standard 8 x 10 picture frame.   ***Certificate of Authenticity plus Commentary Included***
