Frederick W. Smith learned to fly in his teens, became a decorated U.S. Marine Corps aviator, and founded Federal Express (FedEx) in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1971. His "hub-and-spoke" method of distribution revolutionized the transport industry. In 1986, FedEx became the first express company to use the bar code to track packages en route; the following year the company provided high-volume customers with their own FedEx computer terminals. Today FedEx is the largest air cargo carrier in the world with over 600 aircraft. Shown here is a Commemorative Cover to celebrate his induction into the International Aerospace Hall of Fame on April 29, 2000.
On a commemorative cover, the stamp is immaterial; it's only there because the Post Office will not cancel unless there is current postage. On this cover an airmail Wright Brothers stamp issued in 1978 and a 1957US Air Force stamp were used. The postmark is from Marks, Mississippi, where Smith was born, and the date "freezes" his induction date into the Hall of Fame.
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) features a portrait of Frederick W. Smith and a FedEx plane. The producer of this cover has written a short commentary about Smith and his contribution to the aviation transport industry, which we, in turn, have included.
Matted in blue, this piece is sized to fit a standard 8 x 10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity Included plus Commentary Included***
