On May 23, 1984, Australia issued a set of four full-color stamps honoring the Great Clipper Ships of the World....the Cutty Sark, the Orient, the Thermopylae, and the Sobraon. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with all four stamps cancelled from the city of issue (Melbourne, Australia) on the first day of issue captioned above.
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) features superb artwork of another of the world' great sailing ships, the Rainbow, under full sail, by one of the world's foremost maritime artists, Charles Lungren. Great art, unaddressed, this cover is a collectible, historic piece of sailing memorabilia celebrating the bygone age of great clipper ships. The producer of this cover has also written a brief commentary about the Opium Wars, Clipper Ships, and the artist, Mr. Lungren, which we've included.
Matted in blue, this piece will fit a standard 8 x 10 picture frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity plus Commentary Included***
