Canadian Steam Locomotives.....

On October 3, 1983, the Canada Post issued four stamps commemorating four historic steam locomotives for the period 1836-1860  - the Toronto 4-40, the Dorchester 0-4-0, the Adam Brown 4-4-0, and the Samson 0-6-0.  Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with all four stamps cancelled from the city of issue (Ottawa, Canada) on the first day of issue captioned above. Canada's first great railway building began with the incorporation of the Champlain and St. Lawrence Railway in 1832, follwed by a prolific period of railway development in eastern Canada.

The cachet (artwork on the envelope) features two archival photos of men laying track and men standing in front of an early steam locomotive (No.8 "Dakin") of the Great Western Railway, which, in 1854 inaugurated the practice of sorting mail on trains.

Matted in blue, this piece will fit a standard 8 x 10 picture frame.  ***Certificate of Authenticity plus Commentary Included***
