On July 25, 1997, the USPS honored Four Legendary Football Coaches....Professional Football Coaches Vince Lombardi and George Halas, College Coach Bear Bryant, and founder of Youth Football, Pop Warner. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with all four stamps cancelled from the city of issue (Canton, Ohio) on the first day of issue captioned above. The following month all four stamps were issued individually: Vince Lombardi from Green Bay, George Halas from Chicago, Bear Bryant from Tuscaloosa, and Pop Warner from Phiadelphia. The stamps that are issued individually have a red line above the coach's name to distinguish them from the ones shown on this cover issued in blocks of four.
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) depicts football being played. The producer of this cover has also written a short commentary about the role of the coach. We have made a copy for you.
