FT SUMTER Sesquicentennial 1st Day Issue Postal Cover.... From 2011 to 2015, the USPS will issue two stamps a year to commemorate the Sesquicentennial of the Civil War. Shown here is a genuine 1st Day Issue Postal Cover for the stamp commemorating the first shots of the bloodiest war in US history - Ft. Sumter. The design for the stamp is based on a circa 1961 Currier & Ives lithograph titled Bombardment of Fort Sumter, Charleston Harbor, and is cancelled from the city of issue (Charleston, SC) on the first day of issue April 12, 2011. Note the special postmark created to cancel this stamp and the one for First Bull Run on their 'birthdays.'
The cachet (artwork on the envelope) features Robert Anderson, commander of Ft. Sumter and Pierre T. Beauregard, the first Confederate Brigadier General and the man in charge of defenses of Charleston, SC. The picture is printed on silk 'framed' with an embossed gold border.
Double matted in gray & white, it's sized to fit a standard 8 x 10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity Included***
