On October 4, 2006, the USPS issued a set of nine stamps in the form of a Souvenir Sheet commemorating the Southern Florida Wetlands. This set is the eighth in a larger series spanning several years celebrating Nature of America. Shown here is the entire Souvenir Sheet (Stamps surrounded by extra artwork) on an oversized envelope with all nine stamps cancelled from the city of issue ( Naples, Florida) on the first day of issue captioned above. The speical postmark features a pair of wading birds.
The flora and fauna depicted on this exciting full-color sheet are the: Royal Palm, Snail Kite, American Crocodile, Everglades Mink, Saw Grass, West Indian Mahogany, Great Egret, Halloween Pennant Dragonfly, Cape Sable Seaside Sparrow, Wood Stork, Roseate Spoonbill, American Alligator, Red Mangrove, Florida Panther, Zebra Longwing (State Butterfly of Florida), Eastern Indigo Snake, Bald Eagle, Giant Wid Pine, White Ibis, Cowhorn Orchid, and Leafy Vanilla Orchid.
Not only is this piece of Postal Stamp Art a beautiful portrayal of this unique North American ecosystem, but, also a historical, collectible piece of postal memorabilia in the form of a genuine First Day Cover, freezing the 'birthday' of this entire set of stamps.
