On October 9, 1980, the USPS issued four stamps celebrating the American Gothic style of architecture. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover, an envelope with all four stamps cancelled from the city of issue (New York, NY) on the first day of issue captioned above. The four buildings depicted on the stamps are the Smithsonian in Washinton DC, the Trinity Church in Boston, the Pennsyvania Academy in Philadelphia and Lyndhurst in Terrytown, NY.
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) features a painting of one of the finest works of architect Frank Heyling Furness, the University of Pennsylvania Library which opened for use in 1891. Furness is also the architect for the Pennsylvania Academy depicted on the stamp in the lower let corner. The producer of this cover has also written a brief commentary about the library and the career of Furness, which we've included.
Double matted in blue and white, it's sized to fit a standard 8x10 frame. ***Certificate of Authenticity plus Commentary Included***
