On January 22, 1912, the extension between Key Largo and Key West was opened. To commemorate this event, the company of Fleetwood created this Commemorative Cover. A Commemorative Cover is not about the stamp...it's about the cancellation which freezes a place and a time that an event occurred. Hence, the postmark of January 22 1996, from Key West, Florida pinpoints the day and place that Henry Flagler took his dream of his Florida East Coast Railway extending down to Key West a reality. The two stamps that make up current postage are the Railroad Engineers Stamp and the Eddy's No. 242 Stamp.
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) features Engine No. 80, one of the engines that made the run to Key West. It's a 4-6-2 type built by the American Locomotive Company. Later it became Savannah & Atlanta RR No. 750 and is currently housed at the Southeastern Railway Museum in Duluth, Georgia.
Matted in blue, this piece will fit a standard 8 x 10 picture frame. ***A short commentary of this event is included***
